How to Apply
Application to Karuna is free. To apply, please email the following to stephmspector@gmail.com as three separate .docs or PDFs:

  • A completed application form
  • A writing sample
  • A service project proposal containing 3–5 ideas

Application Form
Available here. (Opens as a Word document. Here's the PDF version.)

Writing Sample
Please submit a work sample that best reflects your writing aesthetic or the style of writing you plan to work on at Karuna. The sample should adhere to these constraints:

Fiction: no more than 15 pages
Nonfiction: no more than 15 pages
Poetry and Song: 5–10 poems or songs
Scripts (for TV, plays, or film): no more than 20 pages

If you choose to send a hybrid sample, (e.g. part-poetry, part-screenplay) please do not exceed 25 pages total.

Service Project Proposal
All visiting writers complete at least one service project benefiting Animal Care Sanctuary and its commitment to the humane treatment of animals.

We would like you to propose 3–5 ideas for your project. You might choose to write a personal essay about your experience at the sanctuary, live with one of the resident dogs or cats, hold a supply drive...the possibilities are endless. Feel free to get creative.

For each idea, please be sure to provide the following: a 1–3 sentence summary of the project; an explanation about whether the project will be completed before, during, and/or after your residency; an estimate of how much time the project will take you to complete; and how the project will benefit the sanctuary and its mission.

Notification
The Karuna staff will notify writers with results within two weeks after the application deadline.
